Genetics underlying these behaviors
Monarch butterflies are famous for undertaking a long-distance migration from the northern US and Canada to central Mexico. However, there is a second group of migrating monarchs which reside west of the Rocky Mountains and overwinter along the California coast. My past research found that despite these differences, these monarchs are not differentiated based on neutral genetic markers. I am currently taking a comparative genomics approach in order to determine if certain genomic regions are under selection in these two groups with divergent migratory behavior.
